VIA GRIMALDI is the project that the artist Veronica Tanzi, artist-in-residence from March to April, is presenting at BOCS of Catania. The exhibition runs from the 10th of April to the 15th of May 2010.
Artists always work crossing the borders between reality and truth, and the creator of artistic images always shows his visions in opposition to reality, suggesting his own morphology of truth. It is a necessary way of estrangeing, to which also Veronica Tanzi refers when she focuses her project on Via Grimaldi, where the exhibition itself takes place.
Veronica Tanzi’s work draws from the tradition of performance; a creative process that enables the reflection on the metamorphosis of the ego itself. The reflection also encompasses the surrounding reality that the artist lives every day in a feminine and feminist way. The main theme of the artist’s installation is “the family”, seen as a fundamental reality and establishment of the bourgeois’ thought. A contextual mise en scène that traces the places of appearance, the strong relationship and the feeling of interference and state of guilt of a bourgeoisie society with Jewish-Christian origins.
Veronica Tanzi interviews people, the headquarter’s inhabitants, independently of their personal and social data, in order to collect their experiences, happiness and existential dramas. The Swiss artist does not want to create a theatre of the absurd, instead she wants to give back, through an analytical approach, the fleeting and ostensible strongholds of a society that shows itself dramatically through specific behavioral and moral codes. Often, culture represents the dress that men have built through the ages and from which they try to escape. Again, Veronica Tanzi embodies the artistic medium dimension, bearer of social liturgies.
Via Grimaldi is a complete work, with no beginning and no end, within its progressive and ever changing evolution, only defined and inhibited by the gallery’s structure. The latter can be considered as a multimedia site, because of its ability to recreate physical and mental spaces that detach both from reality and means of production.
Veronica Tanzi recreates “The Family” through everyday objects, clothes, hang out washings, reviewed photo albums, wardrobes containing bright and inner geographies, which are both unspoken and whispered. Inside this limbic place, dresses, shoes and other elements recalling man’s historical and social identification, loose their function, freezing out from their bodies through the temporal obliteration given by the allusive approach of the artist.
The artist’ sensitive and personal eye makes us think about the anthropology of the ceremony, where roles of intimate freedom and identity definitions are played.

VIA GRIMALDI è il progetto che l’artista Veronica Tanzi, artist-in-residence nei mesi di marzo-aprile, presenta presso lo spazio BOCS di Catania che la ospita in mostra dal prossimo 10 aprile fino al 15 maggio 2010.
Da sempre gli artisti operano entro i margini tra realtà e verità, e da sempre il creatore di immagini artistiche manifesta le sue visioni come contrasto alla realtà, al fine di proporre la sua morfologia di verità. È una forma di necessario estraniamento, cui anche VT fa riferimento, allorquando decide di concentrare il suo progetto sviluppato in situ attorno alla via Grimaldi, quartiere dov’è ubicato lo spazio espositivo.
L’opera di VT attinge alla tradizione della performance, processo creativo che gli permette di ragionare sulle metamorfosi dell’IO in SÉ, del suo rapportarsi con la realtà che la circonda e ch’essa vive quotidianamente in un personale tutto femminile e femminista. ‘La Famiglia’, come realtà fondamentale e fondante del pensiero borghese, costituisce il tema originale della sua installazione; una mise en scène contestuale che ripercorre i luoghi dell’apparenza, del rapporto di forza e del senso di interferenza e colp(evolezz)a di una società borghese dalle origini giudaico-cristiane.
VT decide di ‘intervistare’ la gente, gli abitanti del quartiere, indipendentemente dai loro dati anagrafici e sociali, intendendo così raccogliere e ‘collezionare’ le loro esperienze e il loro vissuto, le loro felicità e i loro drammi esistenziali. Non si tratta di un teatro dell’assurdo, che l’artista svizzera vuole mettere in scena, quanto piuttosto restituire, attraverso un approccio analitico, i labili e apparenti capisaldi di una società che si manifesta, talvolta drammaticamente, attraverso determinati codici comportamentali e morali. La cultura rappresenta il più delle volte quell’abito che l’uomo si è costruito nei secoli e da cui cerca disperatamente di uscire. Anche in questo VT incarna la dimensione sciamanica dell’artista, medium e portatrice delle liturgie sociali e societali.
Via Grimaldi costituisce un’opera totale, senza inizio e senza fine entro il flusso del suo progressivo e sempre diverso divenire, delimitata e inibita solo dallo spazio fisico della galleria, multimediale e trans mediale per la sua capacità di ricreare spazi fisici e mentali, che si ritagliano dal reale e dallo stesso mezzo di produzione. VT ricrea ‘La Famiglia’ attraverso oggetti di uso quotidiano, stoffe, il bucato steso ad asciugare, la rilettura di foto d’album; armadi, al cui interno si aprono luminose geografie interiori non dette, ma sussurrate. Abiti, scarpe e altri elementi che rimandano alla identificazione storica e sociale dell’uomo, perdono la loro funzione all’interno di questo luogo limbico, dismettendo la loro corporeità con l’annullamento temporale che l’approccio allusivo di VT intende rappresentare. L’occhio sensibile e personale dell’artista intende farci ragionare sull’antropologia del rito, entro i cui confini si giocano i ruoli delle intime libertà e le definizioni di identità.
